Oh To Be Top Hat

In the closet, Top Hat stands alone, collecting dust he didn't know existed in the ages of black-and-white. Height still towering far above the other clothes, but status fallen far below.

Top Hat isn't ashamed.

Top Hat and Pocket Watch and Spectacles, kings in the world of black-and-white. But Pocket Watch stopped working and was long ago thrown out, because a few select monuments are all the room our world has for useless, beautiful things. And Spectacles got lost in the move, and everything gets lost in the move eventually.

Top Hat isn't bitter.

On one shelf baseball caps reminisce old times, though to Top Hat they're young times.
Short shorts play basketball against muscle shirts, socks and underwear exchange personal horror stories. Jeans are to be avoided, currently in inter-gang war, Skinnies versus Wranglers, very messy.

Top Hat smiles knowingly at the different, yet same sights.

Male muscle shirts will lose because they never seem to stay on anyone, socks and underwear love their jobs deep down, and nobody will win the war besides rips and tears in what were once fine jeans.

Astronomy didn't prove we're moving in circles, we did.

Top Hat expects no retro trends to bring him out of the darkness, no revival-by-hipster. Top Hat's lack of color was made for a different world, he wasn't meant to compete with orange and pink and green, and doesn't want to.
He just wants to look at them, in all their beauty and differences.

Top Hat is at peace with his dust.
Alone but not lonely because he likes the hat he's alone with.
Sad but not unhappy, because, to him, the two emotions aren't necessarily opposites.
